Chain Coupling

The total coupling is made up of 4 components. The main components are 2 sprockets with hardened teeth (not just ordinary sprockets), bored to proper dimensions for mounting on the driver, and driven shafts. These sprockets are available as “taper-lock” types of bushings as well for easier mounting and flexibility. The second component is a “double-row” roller chain of the proper pitch to mate with the sprockets. And finally, we have an outside “Case” that covers the complete chain and sprocket mechanism and is there to keep the lubricating grease from flying around during shaft rotation.

Mounting of the sprockets is rather straightforward in that they are mounted on the driver and driven shafts and positioned with the proper clearance between them so that the roller chain wraps around the sprockets and meshes properly with the teeth.

The body consists of two dedicated sprockets with hardened teeth and a two-strand roller chain. The sprockets are coupled when the chains are wound around the sprockets and decoupled when the chains are removed. Therefore, transmission power can be coupled or separated without moving the transmission system, which can be a real plus for some equipment.

The casing can be separated at a right angle to the shaft for ease of mounting and inspection. The mating part to the hub is finished precisely to hold the hub firmly with no eccentricity. Furthermore, the other hole has a trapezoidal groove into which an oil seal has inserted the prevention of oil leakage while holding the sprocket boss flexibly so that the flexibility of the coupling will not be lost. The coupling life is notably extended due to the prevention of both lubricant spatter and the infiltration of dust particles when installing the casing, which ensures effective lubrication. The casing protects the unit from corrosion and ensures safe operation. Chain couplings are usually employed in low to moderate speed, high torque applications and are not often found in higher speed applications where grid, gear, and other more sophisticated couplings predominate. They are considered to be fairly rugged and easy to install. Typical applications include line-shaft couplings on live-roller conveyors. Here, the plastic chain provides a lubrication-free coupling solution that requires neither covers for lubricant retention nor coupling guards because the smooth outer surface of the chain presents no catch hazards.

For standard power transmission applications, chain couplings can be purchased in a range of shaft sizes and torque capacities, with typical bore diameters up to 4-1/2 in. and torque capacities up to 220,000 in.-lbs. available. Allowable angular misalignment is usually a maximum of 1° and parallel misalignment is usually limited to 2% of the chain pitch. Sometimes these allowances are decreased for installations that operate at higher speeds.

Sprockets are sized in two-tooth intervals to correspond to the roller chain links, with pitches based on ANSI standards (i.e., #40, #60, #80). Ordinarily, the manufacturer will select the appropriate sprocket size and pitch for the given torque requirements, but knowing the pitch of the sprocket makes it possible to select an appropriate replacement chain.

Specifying a chain coupling requires knowing the required bore, calculating the transmitted torque, then applying a multiplier supplied by the manufacturer that rates the severity of the service, usually by machine type. Manufacturers often have on-line calculators to help specifiers in selecting couplings.
